Recent work at the Reserve

Some very good work has been carried out at the Reserve recently:-

Image The black poplar, planted by the river, is a rare native species and replaces a diseased poplar that had to be felled near the livestock entrance.

Hard standing has been constructed for the kissing gate favoured by the cattle! Image

New bat boxes, kindly donated by Alan Jones, were placed on trees at three sites around the Reserve.

Our thanks to the Derby Parks Volunteers and others who helped with this work.

Another successful Balsam Pull
Written by Hans Rieder

A team of eight volunteers spent this Saturday morning "doing their bit for nature" pulling balsam plants from the top end of the reserve, near the stream and swamp.  This is an annual task; it is very hard work but satisfying.

The pictures show the team hard at work among a bed of nettles.

We are grateful to them all for giving up their time to help.

The bluebell slope will be tackled next week by the Derby Parks Volunteers.
